ˇNo Comprendo! Benefit Meeting Disaster

Hispanics comprise a sizeable portion of your work force. They are loyal, have a strong work ethic, are willing to work, and seldom complain. These employees want to work, get paid, and support their families.

You are an employer paying hundreds of thousands, or millions of dollars a year for employee benefits such as medical, dental, etcetera. You provide benefits to recruit and retain employees. You take painstaking steps to help employees understand the benefits, and to demonstrate the value of the benefits programs.

However, it’s only a benefit if we understand it.

Well, There You Go Again: Typical Employee Benefits Meeting

Most likely, your benefits staff is not fluent in Spanish, let alone of Hispanic origin.

Your benefits staff conducts employee benefit meetings. They probably hand out materials in English and Spanish (hopefully your employees can read). Next, the staff, insurance company rep, or benefits broker explains the benefits and answers questions for the English speaking/reading employees. The insurance company rep and the broker must be licensed, bonded and carry errors and omissions insurance.

Would you ask Bill, the English only speaking plant supervisor to thoroughly explain the benefits to the English speaking employees? Of course not! That’s the job of the benefits department and Bill is not a benefits expert. If asked to explain the company medical plan benefits, how well could Bill do it? Additionally, Bill is not licensed or bonded. Nor does Bill carry errors and omissions coverage.

Of course, the benefits staff would prefer a trusted benefits expert to conduct a presentation in Spanish. Good luck finding one!  However, Pablo, one of the Hispanic supervisors, has a pretty good command of the English language.  Pablo’s regular job has nothing to do with benefits, but, all of a sudden, Pablo will simultaneously translate and interpret the “benefits speak” from the English only meeting. How does he do it? Pablo probably has zero employee benefits experience. Furthermore, Pablo is not insurance licensed or bonded.  Ask your General counsel or liability insurance carrier about Pablo interpreting benefits.

“The Meetings Went Great!”

When you ask your benefits broker how all the meetings went, the broker replies “Great, Pablo did a good job talking to his people.” How does the monolingual broker know? “This is how we’ve done meetings ever since the Mexicans started working here.”

The benefits staff also says Pablo does a good job at the benefits meetings. How do they know?

Get the point? Hispanic employees are critical to the success of your company.  If they aren’t, you would not continue to hire them. You spend a fortune on benefits Hispanics do not understand.

It’s only a benefit if we understand it.
